Anagni the City of Popes

Anagni is a medieval town situated on a rocky cliff overlooking the valley of the River Sacco and is surrounded by massive polygonal walls.

The city is above all famous for being the residence and  birthplace of four popes, including Pope Boniface VIII, who founded the Jubilee in 1300.

The splendid Romanesque Cathedral completed in 1077 was remodeled in Gothic style in the 13th century. The Crypt, with its flooring  made by Cosmati artists,  is known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages” with frescoes from 1231-1255.
